"I didn't think it was that far"

After Melbourne, we went to Canberra. Canberra could easily be dismissed if it didn't happen to be Australia's capital.

"Why are you going there?" is a question we were often asked. The answer was always the same: "someone has to!".

So Canberra is the capital. It could have been Sydney but Melbourne would never have agreed. It could have been Melbourne but Sydney would never have agreed. So they built a town between the two and called it, after long debates, Canberra. Some people suggested Democratia or Shakespeare so I guess Canberra isn't that bad after all.

Canberra sits in ACT, i.e. Australian Capital Territory, a mini-state inside New South Wales.

Canberra, Canberra, Canberra, what more can I say about you. Ah, yes, it's very big although not much populated. Hence the title of this article. Indeed, we often found ourselves saying, after 30 minutes of walking, "I didn't think it was that far". So if you like walking, go to Canberra.

Canberra has an old Parliament House and a new Parliament House, a few museums, an impressive international flag display, a 90m-high fountain and lots of friendly inhabitants who seem sorry for any backpacker travelling through their city. When we asked one of them where the nearest supermarket was, he couldn't even tell us its location for sure. When we told another one that hostels were a bit pricey around here, he shrugged and said "welcome to Canberra" in a very apologetic way. Apparently, it's a common thing to be lost and/or spend a lot of money in Canberra. Even Bill Bryson struggled to find his way.

So we decided we liked the people although the city didn't leave a very exciting impression on us.

More flags please!

The finest capital in the world? That guy had a LOT of humour.

Goodbye Canberra! We just spent one night there and that's just what we needed to get to know the capital of Australia. But it was nice and green. So yes, I liked Canberra.
