Milford Sound

And so we left Queenstown and its crazy crowd of young backpackers and mad boyracers
to go on towards the tiny village of Te Anau and then Milford Sound.

No pictures of Te Anau (yet) but quite a few of the Milford Road, one of the most beautiful scenic drive in the country, between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Dare I criticise the Lonely Planet guidebook, for once, and say that they might get a bit too OTT (over the top) when they say that the Milford Road is probably the most beautiful scenic drive in the world. I mean yes, it's a nice one, but in my humblest opinion, is far from beating any coastal road we've been lucky to drive on in Australia and New Zealand. That said, I shall now remain silent and let you meditate upon the following photographs.

Milford Sound is just a harbour with a few cabins and campgrounds along the road. It is famous for one of the best hiking tracks in the country, the aptly named Milford Track. However, hikers have to book very early in advance to hike the track, for the number of trampers is limited. As Evi and I aren't big fans of organisation, we decide to take a 2-hour cruise in the sound, to observe the mountains from another perspective. And I must say we were rewarded with splendid views despite the bad weather.

After the cruise, we jumped back on Squeaky the mighty car and drove back on the Milford Road, stopping every now and then to admire the beautiful mirror lakes.

We finally arrived back at Te Anau, where we had a closer look at Lake Te Anau. Two pictures. I know, I could do better...
