The Otago Peninsula

Our next destination was Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. We actually went to the peninsula first and then to Dunedin.

The Otago Peninsula is world-famous (although I'm sure you've never heard of it) for the only mainland colony of royal albatrosses. HOWEVER we didn't see any because the local research centre is clever enough to charge you around 30 dollars to go and have a look at the colony on the other side of the cliff. But then, I thought, those things fly, so we should see some in the air. No no, my friends, the royal albatross, despite having a wingspan of about 3 metres, apparently is a lazy animal which uses air currents to get carried above the oceans for thousands of kilometres and which doesn't bother to come and say "hi" to us. So we gave it a miss. After all, it's just a bird. Hmph.

At the Royal Albatross Centre, there was an exhibition on local birds, including the "shag". My sense of humour is very basic, you know it. So I couldn't help but take pictures of those boards. Then we walked along the cliff to look for the spotted shag, the blue-tailed shag and the little shag. Very shagadelic indeed.

The aforementioned shags. It's the only occasion I have to use this word so often without sounding rude.

A cute little town on the peninsula: Portobello.

The famous (oh really?) hand-made Happy Hens.
